In the month of March, Poultney is full of activities starting from the first weekend of the month with the All Day Frosty Derby in the Lake St. Catherine, an ice fishing competition on Sunday the 5th that is sponsored by the Poultney Fish and Game Club. The prizes from this competition will be awarded for the largest fish, both in the adult and child category. On Wednesday March 8th, and any other Wednesday of this month, you can have some fun by joining the card party at the Young at Heart Senior Center, from 12:45 pm to 2:00 pm. You can also join the senior center any Friday to play bingo with the community seniors from 12:45 pm to 2 pm.
If you like to draw, be sure to not miss the Open Figure Drawing Session, going on Wednesday March 8th and Wednesday 22nd from 6 pm to 8 pm, on the second floor of the Journal Press Building. If what you like is movies, be sure to attend the free community movie night with the Rutland Area Farm of Food Link (RAFFL) on Thursday 16th at 6 pm in the Paramount theatre in Rutland. The movie that will be shown is ‘Big Night’, a drama about two Italian immigrants who own a struggling restaurant, and their effort to save their business through an elaborate feast. If you want to know more about this event, you can find more information here.
During this month you can also get to help the community by donating some food at Tot’s Dinner every Thursday from 7:30 am to 9:30 am, thanks to the food drive that the restaurant is doing. If you don’t have anything planned for Friday 24th, be sure to stop by the Meeting House, 348 Bentley Ave, to enjoy the Fourth Friday Literary Open Mic from 7 pm to 9 pm. Poets, storytellers and spoken word artists in all genres are invited to perform their own original pieces, classics or other favorites.
The biggest and most popular event in Poultney is going on Saturday March 25th; the Maple Fest 2017. This festival is almost as big as the Poultney Christmas Fair. There are crafters signed up with loads of handmade crafts and local products, including painted sap buckets, yarn, knitted items, jewelry, greeting cards, sachet, photographs, art glass, wood and tin products, jams and pickles, quilted items, wooden bowls, goat milk soap, displays of art, and more. There are also baked goods and food specialties, and do not forget to register for the 5-K Fun Run here. If you want to know more about the events that are going on in this year’s Maple Fest, you can click here.
To finish the month in a more relaxed and quiet way, you can attend the Art Insight with Dick Weis on Sunday March 26th at 3 pm in the Meeting House. Art Insight is a monthly gathering of visual artists at all levels, working in all media, to share work-in-progress, new work and creative ideas. This event is an opportunity for dialogue and share critiques, and it is facilitated by Dick Weis, an artist with a long history of teaching, workshops and critiques with artists and students both in the U.S. and abroad.
